Glengyle Kilkerran

The distillery was reopened by the Chairman of J.& A. Mitchell and Co. Ltd. Hedley G. Wright on March 25th, 2004. After a period of 125 years it was the first distillery in Scotland to be opened in the new millenium. Due to legal problems the whisky produced at Glengyle Distillery is named Kilkerran Single Malt. The brand Glengyle is used for a vatted Highland Malt by Loch Lomond Distillers.

In 1872 the Campbeltown farmer William Mitchell built the distillery. He was an experienced distiller and owned the Springbank Distillery with his brother John who was a farmer too. In 1919 the distillery was sold to Highland Malt Distilleries Ltd. and resold in 1924. Production ceased after the First World War in 1925. The warehouse stock was auctioned the same year on April 8th, 1925.

Kilkerran is derived from Gaelic `Ceann Loch Cille Chiararain`  which was the name for Saint Kerran‘s village, which is now called Campbeltown.

There is no visitor centre. Visits are organized by Springbank Distillery.
