caperdonich   the secret well

One of the sad stories of the Speyside closed in 2002. The independent bottlers still offer this delicate and fruity malt.

Caperdonich was the sister distillery of Glen Grant and founded in 1897. „Grant 2“  - as it was then called - closed in 1902 due to the Pattison Crash which affected many distilleries in those days. The Rothes distillery was opened again in 1965 and its name changed due to legal provisons to Caperdonich. It was refurbished by Glenlivet Distillers Ltd. in 1967. The stills were increased from one pair to two pairs of steam heated stills and the new tun room with the new technology made production with less manpower easy. The annual production was about 1.2 million litres of alcohol.

In 1977 Distillers Corporation Seagram Ltd. purchased Caperdnonich Distillery from Glenlivet Distillers. In 2001 it was changed to Groupe Pernod Ricard who mothballed the premises in 2002.

„The Secret Well“ contributed to Blends of Chivas Regal, Queen Anne and others. Caperdonich Single Malt is very rare on the market.

In 2010 the Caperdonich site was sold to the coppersmiths and manufacturer Forsyths of Rothes. It was dismantled and „bulldozed down“ in 2011.

The Belgian whisky distiller Belgian Owl bought  a pair of the old stills from Caperdonich/Forthsyths as the Belgian distillery wants to increase its annual production from 20.000 bottles to 80.000 bottles.  In summer 2013 the Caperdonich stills will be producing a new make spirit again.
