coleburn

The distillery in the valley near the Rothes to Elgin road is difficult to find. It was built by the famous architect Charles Chree Doig in 1897-1899 and was closed in 1985 by Diageo and dismantled in 1996. The distillery‘s license was given back in 1992. The distillery was founded by John Robertson & Sons in 1896. At the distillery experiments of purification of the alcohol vapours were successfully carried out and copied by some other distilleries.

There have been plans to change the place into a venue and a luxury hotel. The Coleburn Events Company offered an End of Summer Carnival in August 2012. But up to now in November 2015 nothing has happened

Some extremely rare bottlings are still available at independent bottlers or in the Diageo‘s Rare Malt Collection.

Aceo Ltd refurbished the traditional dunnage warehouses at Coleburn. It is now the home of independent bottler Murray McDavid, which was taken over by Aceo in 2013. Aceo Ltd was founded in 1999 and is a cask whisky broker and supplier of related distillery services to the Scotch whisky industry.

Murray McDavid was founded by Mark Reynier, Simon Coughlin and Gordon Wright in 1996. Andrew Gray and Jim McEwan had been councelling them fom 2003 til 2013.
