Speyburn
Speyburn
Designed by the Elgin architect Charles Chree Doig in 1897 the distillery in Rothes started production in Queen Victoria‘s jubilee year. The distillery is now owned by the Billionaire Charoen Sirivadhanabhakdi.
The Galland-Henning Pneumatic drum maltings stopped producing malt in 1967. The first malt drums to be built were by Galland at Pankow in Berlin in 1883. Henning improved the technology and build the first pneumatic malt drums in Milwaukee in 1889. The new Galland-Henning malt drums were installed at Speyburn Distillery in 1897, (see Dennis Edward Briggs, Malts and Malting, 1998).
They are the only remaining examples in Scotland and protected by Historic Scotland/Alba Aosmhor.
The annual production is about 4.200.000 litres of alcohol (2016). The distillery was rebuilt and expanded in 2014.
